This Arrangement is Binding!

“Hi, I’m Yina Xu. I’m from from Beijing China. My country has a long and detailed history in the development and evolution of printing and book binding. After finishing a master’s in business administration, I felt a calling to expand my knowledge in the field of engineering. Print Media Technologies allows me to learn modern, state of art print technologies, build solid engineering skills and gain practical printing experiences.”

Post-Press technologies include anything which is applied after printing, for example binding and finishing. Binding involves folding and fastening of individual sheets together, while finish-ing involves additional decorative actions, such as die-stamping, embossing or laser cutting. Lamination is another possibility. It is available in both gloss and matt finish. The printed sheets are then folded and glued so we get the final look of the printed product.

Although binding is a post-press function, binding considerations need to be dealt with in the pre-press phase of any print job. There are many different ways to bind press sheets, and certain binding allowances need to be made, which vary by binding type. The correct imposition needs to be determined at this time, as well. Imposition issues are usually the purview of the person responsible for the assembly of all the page elements.

Post-press technologies involve a combination of different processes. These include: guillotine and rotary cutting, specialty folding, magazine and pa-perback production, case binding, stationery and loose-leaf binding, saddle stitching, thread binding and thread sealing, embossing and debossing, hot foil stamping, make-up and securing, Laser die cutting and engraving and many more processes.

The Equipment

  • Baumann-Wohlenberg | 115: Wohlenberg High Speed Guillotines of the cut-tec product line are of solid construction and suited for processing various materials, as e.g. paper, cardboard, offset printing plates or similar cutting stock. Modern cutting technique allows rational cutting of different products and sizes.
  • BRM Lasers | 100160: All BRM Laser machines come standard-equipped with servo motors, thereby ensuring your end product’s stability. In addition, the laser tube is chilled by a closed and alarmed water cooling system. The operating precision is ± 0.1mm and the maximum running speed lies between 800-1000 mm/s.
  • MB prestige FoldNET: Intelligent machine control and touch screen operation simplify the folding process. The central touch screen panel is the interactive operator interface where all important settings are made. Manual interference is reduced to a minimum. The operator guidance is self-explanatory. The operator knows at any time which menu is active and which options are still available. Through an interface prestigeFOLD allows integration into in-plant networks. This is the basis for transfer of data to the machine by means of a JDF-file or for production data acquisition.
  • MBO | K70: The K70 is the entry level model from MBO. The K70 is suitable for high-precision, high-performance production of folded products such as signatures and flyers in medium and high print run lengths. Even complicated folding impositions can be produced with absolute precision.
  • Meccanotecnica | Universe: The book sewing machine is the automatic sheet-fed solution for fast and versatile digital book production. The solution allows binding of short runs and guarantees the production of high-quality books.
  • Müller Martini | Vareo: The Vareo perfect binder is the most ideal perfect binder for print finishing specialists and printing plants that use conventional printing modes or are engaged in digital printing. The three-clamp perfect binder can be loaded manually or automatically with book blocks. Whether for medium, short or ultra-short runs, right down to runs of one copy, the Vareo is an all-rounder. The first book can be sold, even from book blocks consisting of individual sheets.
