In an impressive display of innovation and collaboration, students from the undergraduate Print Media Technologies program at Hochschule der Medien (HdM) in Stuttgart have brought to life “Aladdin and the Wonderful Genie,” a modern rendition of the timeless tale. The project, part of the ‘Product Development’ course led by Professor Dr. Volker Jansen, serves as a testament to the integration of traditional creative processes with cutting-edge technology.

The Project Overview

“Aladdin and the Wonderful Genie” is the result of extensive efforts by a diverse group of students who were involved in every stage of production. From creative writing to the final binding, the project reflects the comprehensive skill set that the students have developed during their studies. The initiative not only challenged their technical abilities but also fostered creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

The Creative Process

The story itself is a collaborative creation by authors Andrew Weale and Shadi Al-Hussaini, whose imaginative narrative forms the backbone of the project. Students were tasked with transforming this narrative into a visually engaging book. This involved creating AI-supported images, a process that required both artistic vision and technical prowess. The students experimented with various AI tools to generate images that complement the magical essence of the tale, ensuring that each illustration added depth and dimension to the story.

Production Techniques

The production phase showcased the students’ expertise in modern printing technologies. Utilizing both digital and screen printing methods, they produced high-quality prints that maintained the vibrancy and detail of the AI-generated images. The layout design was meticulously crafted to ensure a seamless flow of the story, enhancing the reader’s experience.

Binding and finishing were conducted in the university’s state-of-the-art technology center, where students employed traditional bookbinding techniques to create a durable and aesthetically pleasing final product. This hands-on experience was invaluable, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the entire production process.

Team Effort and Guidance

The project saw contributions from a large team of students: Ashveen Kaur, Damanpreet Sarwan, Dilnoza Rasulova, Joyce Tumakay, Kunj Shah, Lukas Molitor, Mahdi Akbari, Mohammad Usman Mirza, Muhammed Ahmer, Nadezhda Aminova, Osip Gorbonosov, Philipp Zwicker, Reza Kianiboroujeni, Saiful Islam, Shruti Sharma, Simran Simran, Tuna Çandır, Umoru Hussein, and Xinlei Li. Each member brought their unique skills and perspectives to the table, enriching the project with a variety of ideas and approaches.

The project was kindly supported by Sebastian Paul, Matthias Galus, Antonia Gotz, Bernard Michl, and Heiko Gatawis, whose expertise and guidance were instrumental in navigating the complexities of the production process. Their support ensured that the students had access to the necessary resources and knowledge to successfully complete the project.

Finally, “Aladdin and the Wonderful Genie” is a shining example of what can be achieved through the synergy of creativity and technology. The project not only highlights the talents and dedication of the students at Hochschule der Medien, but also serves as an inspiration for future endeavors in the field of print media technologies. As they step into their professional careers, these students carry a profound understanding of the intricate dance between traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation, ready to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of print media.
