INTERVIEW WITH ROSS AINSLIE
Hi I’m Ross, I am a British and Australian citizen, born in Scotland. I have lived in Germany since 2017 and worked on learning the language for two years before beginning my studies in Print Media Technologies in 2019. I am currently writing my bachelor thesis at Kohlhammer Druck in Obertürkheim, where I also completed my internship. Kohlhammer Druck is a printing company that specializes in offset and digital printing and is responsible for the production of a wide range of products for varying customers, including the likes of Daimler, Thieme, Deutsche Bahn, and more.
My role at Kohlhammer Druck has developed since the beginning of my internship. Originally, I was responsible for assisting in the creation and organization of a print-on-demand web shop for Daimler. This included the creation of 3D product images, the development and integration of a paper catalogue system to reflect the required print products, and workflow planning for new machinery. Currently, my bachelor thesis has a focus on developing interoperability between PostScript and XML to promote load distribution between different printing presses.
Through my studies and work at Kohlhammer Druck, I have gained invaluable skills and experiences that will enable me to advance in my future career. The curriculum and courses offered in print media technologies have introduced me to varying technologies within the industry and have allowed me to attain an overview of printing trends and processes. In particular, by having the opportunity to attend the advanced lab classes, I was able to build upon my problem-solving abilities, develop scientific writing skills, and apply the theoretical knowledge gained throughout my studies to analytical topics regarding varying printing technologies.
As an international student, being enrolled in print media technologies has allowed me to gain friends from different cultures and backgrounds. As a future engineer, a vast knowledge and experience of diverse situations and people are beneficial. As companies and industries become increasingly globalized, the ability to work with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and understand global trends, has become even more important. For this reason, I am happy to have studied print media technologies at Hochschule der Medien and look forward to seeing what the future holds for myself and my fellow students.
